We are talking about a sustainable world. We are discussing the climate crisis, global warming, pollution, greenhouse gases, degradation of biodiversity, melting of glaciers and their deadly effects. We deal not only with the issue of nature, but also with issues such as humane life and justice for a sustainable future.
Mankind has plundered nature, which has been keeping its balance for billions of years, in the name of ‘civilization’ at great speed. On the one hand, the relationship between nature and human has deteriorated, on the other hand, human-human relations. The conditions that created the climate crisis also widened the gaps between countries, societies and therefore people all over the world.
World societies did not go through this so-called civilization process under the same conditions. Since the era of colonization, some have simply taken and consumed; others just had to give in and run out. Now, it is being talked about that issues such as the climate crisis will make this situation even more irreversible, and new climate-related wars around the world.
Democracy, equality and climate change!
Already struggling with economic, social and societal problems; some countries that have not yet come to terms with fundamental issues such as democracy, equality and independence are witnessing that the extraordinary conditions triggered by the climate crisis are a new field of struggle for them. Look at the floods, great fires, storms and their deadly and devastating effects that we now witness almost every day in any part of the world. Thus, the beginning migrations, conflicts, social movements…
Today, while we are discussing the necessity of a great transformation against the climate crisis and its effects, we see that in a significant part of the world, let alone these issues, the struggle for survival is given. While the big brothers of the world raise these issues and put forward theses on a new world order, on the other hand, they turn their backs on those who are fighting for this life and turn a blind eye to situations that will have tragic effects for humanity; they even create these conditions with their self-seeking agenda.
Sustainability is a human issue.
“The question is…whether we shall, by whatever means, succeed in reconstituting the natural world as the true terrain of politics, rehabilitating the personal experience of human beings as the initial measure of things, placing morality above politics and responsibility above our desires, in making human community meaningful, in returning content to human speech, in reconstituting, as the focus of all social action, the autonomous, integral, and dignified human, I,…” Vaclav Havel, Open Letters
Sustainable world is not limited to the relationship between nature and human. It is also closely related to the relationship of the humans.
The sustainability agenda does not only include the issue of the climate crisis. Issues such as basic human rights, humane life and justice are also vital for a sustainable future.
Therefore, while addressing issues such as the climate crisis, such vital agenda in the world should not be overlooked.
Otherwise, while we have not been able to solve the issues such as justice, equality, humane life, democracy, gender equality with the minimum common; the solutions imposed for environmental problems can push especially the third world countries into a much deeper chaos. And so, it could create a new era of conflict and violence, adding even more tragic stories to the golden pages of history. The history of the world, written in tragedies with grave consequences, does not need new ones…
